About the breed
The American Guinea Pig is the most common and recognisable breed of cavy, with ancestors domesticated thousands of years ago in the Andes region of South America. It is characterised by a smooth, short coat and a gentle, rounded body, and is available in a wide range of colours and markings.
Highly social animals, guinea pigs are happiest in the company of their own kind and should ideally be kept in pairs or small groups. They are gentle, docile and famously vocal, communicating with distinctive squeaks, 'wheeks' and purrs. A diet of unlimited hay, fresh vegetables and a daily source of vitamin C is essential, as guinea pigs cannot produce the vitamin themselves.
