About the breed

The Beagle is a small scent hound developed in England primarily for hunting hare, working in packs and guided almost entirely by its superb sense of smell. Its compact, sturdy build and tireless nose made it a favourite with hunters, and its cheerful, sociable disposition has since made it a beloved family dog.

Beagles are affectionate and merry but famously single-minded once they catch an interesting scent, which can make recall training challenging. They are vocal, often giving the distinctive baying 'bay', and benefit from secure fencing and plenty of walks. The short, dense coat is easy to maintain and sheds moderately.
