About the breed
The French Bulldog descends from toy bulldogs taken to France by English lace workers during the Industrial Revolution, where the breed was refined and gained its signature erect 'bat' ears. Compact and muscular, the 'Frenchie' became a fashionable companion in Parisian society and remains hugely popular today, especially in cities.
Affectionate and comical, French Bulldogs form close attachments and adapt well to apartment living, needing only modest exercise. As a brachycephalic (flat-faced) breed, they can struggle in heat and with strenuous activity, and benefit from attentive care of their facial folds. Their short coat is low-maintenance and sheds little.
