About the breed
The Golden Retriever was developed in the Scottish Highlands during the mid-nineteenth century by Lord Tweedmouth, who sought a capable gundog suited to the wet climate and rugged terrain. Crossing a yellow retriever with the now-extinct Tweed Water Spaniel produced a loyal, soft-mouthed dog with a distinctive lustrous golden coat.
Renowned for their gentle, patient temperament, Golden Retrievers are among the most dependable family dogs and serve widely as guide, therapy and assistance animals. Their feathered double coat requires regular brushing to prevent matting and to manage seasonal shedding. Active and eager to please, they thrive on companionship and consistent, reward-based training.
