About the breed

The Dachshund was bred in Germany to hunt badgers, its name translating literally as 'badger dog'. Its elongated body and short, powerful legs were purpose-built for pursuing quarry into underground burrows. The breed comes in three coat types — smooth, long-haired and wire-haired — and in standard and miniature sizes.

Bold and tenacious, the Dachshund retains a strong prey drive and an independent, sometimes stubborn streak that calls for patient, consistent training. Its distinctive long back makes it prone to spinal problems, so jumping and stair use should be managed and a healthy weight maintained. Affectionate and alert, it makes a loyal and characterful companion.
