About the breed

The Maine Coon is one of the oldest natural breeds in North America, having developed in the harsh climate of the state of Maine, where its rugged constitution took shape. Among the largest of domestic cats, it is distinguished by a long, shaggy coat, a bushy tail, tufted ears and large, well-furred paws that act like snowshoes.

Often described as 'gentle giants', Maine Coons are affectionate, people-oriented and famously good-natured, frequently following their owners from room to room. They are intelligent and playful, and many enjoy water. The thick, water-resistant coat requires regular combing to prevent tangles, particularly around the ruff and britches.
