About the breed

The Ragdoll was developed in California in the 1960s by breeder Ann Baker, who selected for an exceptionally docile, affectionate temperament. The breed takes its name from its tendency to go limp and relaxed when picked up, much like a child's rag doll. It is a large, semi-longhaired cat with striking blue eyes and a colour-point coat.

Ragdolls are gentle, placid and deeply people-oriented, often greeting their owners at the door and following them about the home. Their relaxed nature means they are typically happiest indoors. The soft, silky coat has little undercoat, so it is less prone to matting than other longhairs, but still benefits from regular combing.
