About the breed
The Scottish Fold traces back to a single barn cat named Susie, discovered in Scotland in 1961 with unusual folded ears caused by a natural genetic mutation. This cartilage mutation gives the breed its signature forward-folded ears and rounded, owl-like expression, though not all kittens in a litter develop the fold.
Scottish Folds are sweet-natured, calm and affectionate, forming close bonds with their families and generally adapting well to other pets and children. The same gene responsible for the folded ears affects cartilage throughout the body, so responsible breeding and joint health are important considerations. Depending on coat length, the breed needs moderate grooming.
