About the breed
The Siberian Husky was developed by the Chukchi people of north-eastern Siberia as a hardy sled dog capable of hauling light loads over vast distances in bitter cold. Brought to Alaska in the early twentieth century, the breed gained fame for its endurance in sled races and its role in delivering serum during the 1925 Nome epidemic.
Huskies are friendly, outgoing and remarkably athletic, with a famous love of running that demands secure containment and ample exercise. Their thick double coat insulates against extreme cold and sheds profusely twice a year. Independent and intelligent, they are known escape artists and can be vocal, often 'talking' and howling rather than barking.
